Virginia State Police investigating inmate death at Rockingham County Jail

policecar3The Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation, Culpeper Field Office, is investigating an inmate death that occurred on December 7, at the Rockingham County Jail. The investigation by state police is at the request of the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office.

Calvin Douglas Carnette Jr., 44, of Harrisonburg, was brought into the jail Friday evening, December 5, on an arrest warrant for Assault and Battery. On the morning of December 7, at approximately 10:10 a.m., the inmate was found unresponsive in his cell by jail staff. Emergency Medical Services were immediately called to respond where he was subsequently pronounced dead.

The body has been transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Roanoke for examination and autopsy. At this time, investigators do not suspect foul play and the investigation is ongoing.
